Buying Tickets for The Colosseum, Roman Forum, & Palatine Hill
Today was a Friday Adventure day and we were finally doing our official interior visits to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill – which requires tickets to get in!
Buy Your Tickets Ahead of Time!
We woke up early and walked our 35-minute trek all the way to the Colosseum with hopes and dreams of going inside!
However, when we got there… there were no tickets available! You can no longer buy them at the ticket windows and they have an allotted amount of tickets sold due to pandemic restrictions.
We had no idea you had to buy them in advance but learned very quickly that anytime we plan to go anywhere, buying tickets in advance is a must!
This little mistake could have foiled our plans for the whole day, but we took a pause and sat down while we tried to figure out what to do next. Steven was refreshing the page and somehow magically scored 2 tickets for 12 PM! So the day was saved! I really think we just got lucky with that one.
Learn from us – purchase your tickets ahead of time! Both at the Colosseum and to any ticketed experience you’re traveling to nowadays. It will absolutely save you the hassle and the potential of having to pivot your plans, especially if you have limited time.
Here’s the site we bought our tickets from if you’re interested.
Going Inside the Colosseum
We went in about 15 minutes early for our ticket time and walked all around the Colosseum. It was so surreal! It’s amazing how much history is there, you can feel it.
From the Ancient Romans and gladiator fights to Lizzie McGuire’s iconic performance in 2003… it all happened HERE! 😜
As crowded as it was, the Colosseum felt very still and quiet. We walked around and took tons of pictures from every floor and angle so we could get all of the different views.
We didn’t do a guided tour or anything at the Colosseum, although those were available. We opted for a self-guided experience and just explored wherever we were drawn to. I would say we spent a little over an hour here!
Once we felt satisfied, we made our way over to the Roman Forum next which was also included with our ticket. On our walk over, we had some beautiful views and had the chance to take some ground-level photos of the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine.
Tickets Also Include The Roman Forum
Our ticket gave us the opportunity to enter the Roman Forum and walk alongside the ruins. Just like the day we Explored the Roman Forum From Above, it felt so surreal to be here. Being on the same level with the Forum felt even more intense – you walked where the ancient Romans walked. The Forum has been there for such an unfathomable amount of time – it’s such a privilege that we are still able to see the remains today!
Views from Palatine Hill
The third location included with our ticket was Palatine Hill… which we kept wanting to call “Palpatine” Hill, thanks to Star Wars.
I almost opted out of walking up the hill because I was feeling a bit tired/hungry/woozy… BUT THANK GOD I DIDN’T MISS IT! It was worth pushing through to go see, trust me!
The steps took us up to the most beautiful little courtyard.
And then you walked up to an overlook and saw a birds-eye view of the Forum and Roma itself! It was truly unbelievable, we were both completely stunned. This view took our breath away. I am so happy I got to see this in my lifetime!
Today’s Adventure: Complete!
And that completes our exciting Friday morning! We walked back, stopped at the grocery store, worked, and packed – because we were going on a weekend adventure to a brand new city! The excitement was REAL!
So come back next time as we take on a weekend trip to Florence, Italy! I am so looking forward to sharing this part of the journey with you. 🙂
